bone parenting or constraint to a different mesh?

i have two meshes, both with armatures. i'm trying to set up a bone from one armature to follow the location and rotation of some verts from the other mesh, ie the one it's not deforming. is this possible?

i was trying to figure this out for several hours before posting, and now have it working.
i've added a "child of" constraint to the bone i wanted to follow the verts of the other mesh. after setting up a vertex group on that mesh, the constraint then offers that as a child of the mesh object in it's options.
