Motion Capture
« on: November 02, 2014, 08:42:54 PM »
Has anyone here had experience with a motion capture product called "FASTMOCAP"? It is software that uses MS Kinect sensors to animate characters. I'm thinking of purchasing mocap software and the sensor device.

As for FASTMOCAP, their webpage seems promising, but I can find very little else on it. Their webpage also steers you to purchase the Kinect sensor for the XBOX gaming console, one which salesmen say will not connect to my PC. There are other OS compatibility issues that seem to pop up between what the website says and what MicroSoft says.

I have e-mailed the company, but have recieved no replies from them.

I've been doing Google searches on it, but not finding useful reviews on it.... Most seem to be written by the Chinese under american sounding names based out of "down home" places like Ohio & such, but with horrible grammar and misspellings. Many appear to be the same author using different identities.

I'm hoping some people here have heard of it. If not, what mocap techniques are popular with the people on this site?

thx,

Kinect it's only available as a commercial hardware with developer/SDK, so yes there are likely a fair few compatibility issues (there is no consumer level hardware/software available yet). Kinect for PC (you do need the PC version as the XBox hardware doesn't work, unless you want to crack it open and hack it) can be purchased direct from MS though for about $200 or for similar price from Amazon (US) - that gets you the hardware and SDK but nothing that equates to plug-n-play Motion Capture. For that you'll likely need to take a look at the following as apparently these work (to varying degrees);

- IPISoft Mocap Studio
- Brekel Kinect
- Bvhacker

Do note I can't vouch for any of the above as I've not used them so you will need to do a lot of research and testing beforehand.
