This is one of the inherent problems with games like Oblivion, the game world is so huge that artists don't have the time or resources to do that kind work. It also backs up what I keep saying about the reliance on 'boob' heightmap based terrain, that we shouldn't use it so much!

There's a lot of grunt work gone into putting that environment together, would be interesting to see just how well it plays from a performance point of view.

[EDIT]moved to public disc.

Should pay more attention to what forum im in before posting.

Terrain from height map is so old now that I cant see how anyone gets away with it still. I think interesting outdoor environments like this could still be created easily with the right tool set, the artist really only need to lay out the general structure of the terrain. Because of the nature of nature :-\ a bit of random chaos usual just makes it look more real.

Now I have finaly finished my degree and my time is my own once again :D perhaps this is a good reason to pick up the old procedural generation project again.

Rather than start a new topic... Elder Scroll V: Skyrim has been officially announced with an initial release data of 11/11/11 next year. There is a teaser vid available but it doesn't show anything from within the game per-say. Not 100% on this but that sounds like Max von Sydow (Minority Report) doing the voice-over in the clip which speculatively means they've got some 'heavy weight' actors in again (Patrick Stewart being in the previous).

imo, most teasers are dispointing and hardly worth watching, but very good news about elder scrolls 5, looking forward to seeing some actual in game content, also am i correct in thinking they have built a new engine for this one? :)

Apparently its using a 'new' engine built in-house (they've definately dropped Gamebryo/Emmergant as that's been put up for sale apparently). Everything else is speculative, but you obviously can't have another company like ID software as a stablemate and not poach their collective engine know-how in some shape of form.

understood and hopefully the animations and character models will also become more realistic.

I never really had that many issues with the games running on that tech *except* that they were pushing it harder than I think it should have been. Both Morrowind and Oblivion seemed over developed from a content point of view; the models and mesh were far to high in poly count relative to what they did - you probably could have got away with a 50% drop and not loose anything visually. Of course switching to new tech potentially means not being as mod friendly (I've not heard anything on that score for the new game), CS Tools allowed for just as much custom content as idtech and UDK.

So... it looks like Skyrim info is gathering pace. According to GameInformer, Bethesda rewrote the entire engine, now called the "Creation Engine". Modding this new iteration of Elder Scrolls appears to be something being actively pursued with the release of "Creation Toolkit". There's more info on Bethblog. In the shot below, it looks like they've made better use of the polycount from Oblivion, always surprised me just how much mesh data there was even on the simplest of objects.

Removed the image, seems Gameinformer had the media live in shortterm.
