Title: Blender for IMVU furniture tutorial
Post by: JanXuan on June 11, 2017, 08:25:24 PM
Hello,

I have a little problem at 10.20 in the video "Making simple furniture for IMVU."
I am using Blender 2.78 and the katbits template.
When I switch to Edit mode, the selected cube does not change color, but the orange outlines turn green instead.
What could have gone wrong?

Not sure if the name of the block is important. In the video it comes as (1) block.MESH, in my version it is called (1)blockFLOOR.MESH.

You mean this "making simple IMVU furniture" tutorial video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6Oj5hqPar4)? So with the Cube selected when you press "Tab" and enter "Edit Mode" the mesh doesn't change at all? Hmm.. odd, the green outline usually means the object is part of a "Group" (a collection of objects), but that only displays in "Object Mode".

To see whats going on, with the object selected (in Object Mode) go into "Object Data" properties (click the orange Cube icon in the panel to the right where all the other Properties options are). If the object is part of a Group this can be confirmed by looking at the "Groups" sub-section (scroll down if necessary), an entry will appear here. Click the "X" to remove the Group association.

Also make sure to right-click the cube to select it, then press "Tab" to enter/exit Edit Mode.

In Object Mode it is selected and outlined orange.
There are no groups.
The object is indicated as parent.

Hmm that's odd. You can clear the Parent attribute by selecting the object (in Object Mode again) pressing "Alt+P" to "Clear Parent". Beyond that not sure what's going on, a colour change usually indicates a modification of an element, and if you've yet to actually do anything, and you're using the example file, there shouldn't be any markers beyond the aforementioned. Send the file to imvu@katsbits.com and I'll have a gander.

OK, is the image below what you see?

Don't know why this didn't occur to me but that's perfectly fine... the colour just indicates a Material assignment that has a colour property, "Diffuse", changed from the default 'white-ish' tone (which makes meshes appear grey-ish in the 3D View) to another value (green). Seeing it happens when viewing the Scene in "Solid" display mode - press "Z" and "Alt+Z" to toggle the different display modes, or left-click the little 'sphere' icon in the Header area directly below the main area. The mesh can be edited without issue.

When entering Edit mode the object should have tiny dots on the corners. I don't see them in my screen.

Ah, OK I see what's going on now. So two things;

1) edges - what you're seeing are edges marked (assigned) a 'property', in this instance that's "Sharp", it tints edges with the property that blue-ish-green-ish colour. It can be ignored for now as it doesn't affect the edit-ability of the mesh (it's pre-assigned to the mesh for convenience).

2) the dots (vertices) - they are there, just not immediately visible because they're being obscured by all the other on-screen elements. If you right-click near any one of the corners they select and highlight (become more apparent). Or you can press "A" to select the entire mesh and it will highlight as indicated at that point in the video - the fact that they are not highlighted just means they are not selected for manipulation or modification.

The discolouration indicates a property assignment to an edge, "Sharp" in this instance.

I had to press A twice. It is colored now.  :)

When that has to be done it means something was already selected; pressing "A" once DEselects everything, pressing "A" again then REselects everything.

Yes, I had figured that out already.  ;D
I already made 4 different airplane seats now.

Just for your info some work that I did 35 years ago.
