Title: [closed] Open Source Gaming Project in Java with Blender
Post by: richard_hawkes on September 15, 2010, 05:03:58 PM
[CLOSED/COMPLETED]

Hey there,

I am looking for experienced (or keen to learn) Blender artists interested in working on an open source gaming project.  The intention of the project is to make the source code and artwork (initially) publically available. This allows for greater scrutiny by the open source community, and will hopefully mean we can leverage experts to provide additional bug corrections and advice.

Your work would be covered by a license making it freely available for other applications, but acknowledgement must exist for your work. Their code/work must also remain open source.

Once we have an experienced quorum, we would abandon open source code development (although this would remain available to the community) and begin a commercial venture. Of course, you would then be paid for your work!

The game "concept" itself is still very much open to discussion. In fact, I would look to the expertise of the artists to guide the game itself. It certainly won't be an MMO (although I have coded an MMO engine!). I am very keen to produce an achievable project plan.

I myself have been coding using a Java gaming engine (JMonkey Engine) and have managed to come a long way in terms of what I am able to produce. I am also seeking additional Java developers to help in the project. The engine (version 2) itself has a number of frustrating shortcomings (confusing collision detection, no real api, no menu controls) which have been addressed in the latest release (version 3). However, this is still in alpha so I will look to start coding again once it reaches beta (approx 1 month).

If you're interested in seeing some details of my current work, please visit http://code.google.com/p/lonedev (http://code.google.com/p/lonedev) ( thanks for spotting the mistake Kat  ::) ) . Like I say, the project has been stagnant for a few months now, but I am once again hoping to ramp it up with a good group of dedicated artists.

You would be creating using Blender 2.49 (sorry) because the JMonkey Engine (version 3) requires the models to be exported as OgreXML files, and there is currently no plugin for 2.5x. I would imagine there will be one soon once Blender settles down, at which time we can move to the newer version.

Please feel free to contact me with any further questions. If you are interested, I would appreciate some example screenshots of your work. If you've worked with low-poly models before, that would be a great bonus. I would like to emphasise that this is very much targeted as a fun project. If/when we decide things are going well, we can consider a more serious venture.

Thanks
Richard

Did you mean to post a link to your projects page rather than the main GoogleCode page?

Very good point, thanks Kat! I have now linked to my actual project in the main thread message. I wasn't fussed about people going to JMonkey Engine web site (unless they are curious).

Do you still search an artist? galaga (http://galagaonline.net) I open your project page and it seems that it's not updated since 2010.

Hi Kathleen,

I had to take time away from this, but have always held out that I would get time to do more work on this... Are you interested?
