Forbes has penned a speculative article that's being picked up and spread by mainstream media that suggests Sony's PlayStation 4 may have been used to plan the Paris attacks (emphasis added). To reiterate, the operative word there is "may". At present there is no evidence to connect PlayStation 4 to any terrorist attack, let along Paris, which makes the statement the equivalent of inculcating Blackberry or Apple, or even O2 or Comcast networks, in acts of terror because they might have been used at some point. Jumping the shark a little. Their source for the speculation is a comment made by Belgians Home Affairs Minister Jan Jambon;
Quote
He warned of the growing use by terror networks of the gaming console PlayStation 4, which allows terrorists to communicate with each other and is difficult for the authorities to monitor. "PlayStation 4 is even more difficult to keep track of than WhatsApp" he said. [The Bulletin]

So, is this an indirect call the Brussels to do something about the online gaming space and the existential threat it apparently poses. Are gamers to look forward to a future of 'digital passports', of needing to have 'reputable profiles' before being allowed to play online or connect with other similarly approved persons. Or is the net to be cast as far and wide as possible inculcating everyone, charging them of being guilty of something that's just not yet been discovered...

that's interesting to hear the ps4's voice or text chat is currently a secure form of communication. i'm surprised sony was allowed to design the console like that?

and regarding conspiracies, as a popular meme mockingly states "jet fuel can't melt steel beams" therefore most other conspiracies can surely be dismissed as fallacious. which is quite convenient for people wanting to cover up something.

So far as I know PlayStation Network has to be secure because it carries data that can identify the individual in terms of the personal information attributed to credit cards and other sensitive materials - notwithstanding it needing to be secure to verify game-codes. It being used for clandestine communication is an incidental but perhaps inevitable consequence of that (as is any secure network or channel of comms). As said before though, the authorities should be more concerned with the use of social media where they openly recruit and advertise for followers. This stuff doesn't happen in the vacuum the media and authorities like to paint it as doing so and that shouldn't by proxy inculcate everyone (we don't say everyone is a shop-lifter because shop-lifting happens under peoples noses).

As for the term "conspiracy theory", although it's been long used, our understanding of it appears to have some founding in the Clinton Administration and their concerns to counter what was then, in the mid-to-late 1990's, a burgeoning Internet; the terms was used by the then Administration to lay accusations at the feet of those they perceived as being enemies at home - largely anyone undermining the authority of the administration, but especially - the "Right Wing". This is discussed at some length in the COMMUNICATION STREAM OF CONSPIRACY COMMERCE memo's where the money chain and motivations of what are now called "conspiracy peddlers" is explained (as the Administration saw it). There are other memo's available advancing that a certain sentiment and language be used and ascribed to the term, and more especially the individuals holding the views ascribed to them, so as to effectively poison or neuter the term, turning into what we now know.
