I've not looked at this properly yet but there's a new (free?) player/web plug-in called Burster that can apparently run interactive *blend files. According to the site - http://geta3d.com/ - the app is based on a modified version of the original BlenderPlayer from ages past that never quite made it into serious development. Source code looks to be getting released at some point. At present only available for PC and Linux, no Max app as of yet. Info on getting content into the player can be found here.

[EDIT]Reading a bit further on this, it looks like the player is a means to an end to 'sell' the encryption services of the company behind the tool. The tool basically appears to be targeted at distributing *.blend files to people that don't have Blender and/or just need a simple 'player' for the files; the encryption services then come into play with the 'locked' delivery of the assets (the encrypted *.blend files) to the client.

From what I can gather, the 'free' part of it is.. they were supposed to be releasing the source code to the rendering system iirc. But, the 'paid' encryption service that plugs into the player is proprietary so won't be (for obvious reasons).

understood, and thinking about it, that seems reasonable.
