Title: Make a minecraft style character in Blender
Post by: kat on May 29, 2019, 02:37:51 AM
To make a simple minecraft style character take a look at the following 'blue-print (https://www.katsbits.com/images/tutorials/minecraft/minecraft.pdf)' that's designed around a very particular design idea, that the characters dimensions being be restricted and regular in shape so it can be (UV) mapped to fit a predefined image/UV layout.

Twitch Video
With the above blue print in mind the character can be assembled from a couple of simple Cube meshes before each is given a basic Material and UV unwrapped to fit the predetermined layout. Once done the characters can be rigged - vertex groups and Parented to a simple Armature, which is then animated.

Character is fully rigged and articulated and includes 24 animations. The 'skin' texture assigned in Blender is archived with the file and sized 512 x 256 pixels for ease of use/clarity. It needs rescaling to 64 x 32 pixel for comparable use/compatibility with any game/project styled around Minecraft.

Yep! The minecraft character, or characters using a similar blocky style, is a good way to learn a lot about rigging and animation because it's so simple and yet allows for a surprising amount of complexity from the way it articulates. Good for beginners especially.

agreed, i need to learn how to do character animation in blender. this series of yours will be very useful. the models are less distracting and less likely to clutter the screen then a realistic looking character, so good for prototyping.

Won't be doing that with any Twitch videos going forward, the codec that allows for decent live broadcast - variable bitrate and framerate - alters playback off-site or on other platforms, it tends to make videos speed up or slow down, especially for low-bandwidth recordings... and of course there's no chat unless that's on-screen recorded at the same time.

understood. i personally don't like on screen chat. it should always be next to the video window if possible, like your twitch pages have it.
