Blog / SCAM WARNING - YOUPORN Bitcoin Sextortion & Blackmail Scams
« Last post by kat on August 18, 2023, 10:59:26 AM »
In pursuit of ever more effective ways to scam people of their money through bitcoin, sexploitation and blackmail scams, enter the unsolicited YOUPORN email that claims to draw the recipients attention to the upload of "sexually explicit content" 'someone' posted to YouPorn, a platform that obviously exists for exactly that.

The scam takes advantage of adult platforms like YouPorn having liability policies concerning 'revenge' materials and other 'unauthorised' content being uploaded to their sites without the participants/copyright holders permissions, that require uploaders confirm, or be contacted to confirm, the legitimacy of an upload.

For the scam to work it obviously relies of the fact the reader will jump to a conclusion without reading too deeply and/or realising the sexploitation that's at work; "Who could have recorded a video of me doing 'X'" and/or "who could have uploaded a video of me doing 'X'", and then act impulsively to seemingly fix the problem by sending in bitcoin to the address listed, never to be returned or refunded (the curse of bitcoin and other digital currencies).

How to determine fake YouPorn sexploitation/blackmail emails;
- Any (pink) highlighted links will be 'null' ('https://' only).
- Emails may not be correct ("This email was sent to [incorrect address]...") - check message recipient and email footer.
- Solicitation of money to remove unauthorised content (illegal for service to do this).

FAQ on games, gaming & IT / Can't Sign In to SoundCloud App (Not Responding)
« Last post by kat on August 15, 2023, 09:11:26 AM »
Problem
SoundCloud app on Android device opens (and can be closed/forced stopped) but does not respond to any User input when attempting to sign in. Action described here "I'm having trouble signing in through my Android device" do not work. So;

  • Tapping 'create account' or 'sign in' results in no activity (app does recognise if User is online/offline however).
  • Uninstalling and reinstalling the SoundCloud app does not solve the problem (uninstall/reinstall can be done without issue).
  • Clearing app cache in Settings > Apps > SoundCloud > Storage > Clear Cache similarly does not fix the problem.

Solution
A possible solution to SoundCloud app being unresponsive is to first log into an appropriate SoundCloud account using a web browser, Chrome, Brave, Edge etc., on the same device as the SoundCloud app and then (re)opening the SoundCloud app. Upon doing this the app may 'find' that account and attempt to automatically login with the credentials used during the web browser session, showing the 'Home' page as confirmation. Or alternatively the 'sign in' prompt may then become functional.

Blackberry Hub gmail error

Problem
When using Blackberry Hub to manage Gmail emails the following error may occur when setting up an account;

Quote
Access blocked: authorisation error.

You can't sign in from this screen because this app doesn't comply with Google's secure browsers policy. If this app has a website, you can open a web browser and try signing in from there.

The error occurs intermittently, and depending on the device used, age not necessarily being a factor.

Solution
Instead of using the 'auto-setup' feature provided by Blackberry Hub;
  • Step #1: add the email address to be accessed in the initial Account setup screen and tap the Manual Setup prompt.
  • Step #2: set the Account type in the following screen; POP3, IMAP or Microsoft Exchange Activesync.
  • Step #3: for IMAP, in the 'setup' page that appears after tapping the IMAP prompt, add/edit the Incoming server settings to correspond to Googles defaults for Gmail as outlined here - "Gmail Email Settings: POP3, IMAP, and SMTP Servers". Crucially set the Security type to SSL/TLS (Accept all certificates).
  • Step #4: in Outgoing server settings set the Security type to SSL/TLS (Accept all certificates), or optionally to STARTTLS (Accept all certificates). Disable (clear the checkbox for) Require signin.
  • Step #5: set the Account options and press Next to complete setup.
If the account is still blocked make sure 'IMAP' is enabled in Gmail, and/or try swapping the Security type options between SSL/TLS and STARTTLS (with or without 'accept all certificates') for both incoming and outgoing mail.

Boycotting AI

Let's be totally frank about the AI Wars of 2023; what can artists, creators, authors actually do about it? No, really. What?

How many would need to decline use of Google, Microsoft, Amazon et al products and services that backbone the development and deployment of AI?

How much would need to be surrendered to dent their trillion-dollar bottom lines enough for them to course-correct, stop or reign in their pursuit of everything AI? And how long would that take?

In the mean-time, will 'independent' AI developers, researchers and content creators stop out of conscience? For the good of mankind? Or will they carry on, saturating the market with cheap, readily consumed content, that will be less derivative as time passes.

After all progress is good.

More pointedly, why would the AI gods want to surrender control over the engineered future they have in stall for humanity (THX1138, Logan's Run, et al)? AI as an 'everything app', service or tool.

For artists, creators, authors and the likes, what is an effective strategy to counter this reality?

Copyright?

Consumers don't care about "copyright" - if its available, it is consumed (it must be okay otherwise it wouldn't be available).

Consumers will avidly consume the 'personalised' entertainment experiences they are going to be told AI can dynamically generate for them;

Promo: "Customise your cinematic experience for just $9.99 a month"
Service: "Please enter your text prompts"
Consumer: "Willow fighting the ancient unicorn-demon terrors, Bella and Tom Cruise faithfully by his side".
Service: "Please wait a moment while we render your selection".

Again, what can artists, creators, authors, do to slow, never mind stop, this tide?

Who are they to stand in the way of highly individualised content consumption?

By the time any corrective legislation goes live, China, India and other jurisdictions that don't fully comply with International Copyright will engage the warp drives to 11 and Spinal Conquistadors will rule the tomato infested wheat pool.

Blog / Inadvertently Perpetuating Copyright/DMCA Confusion

Saw this posted to Instagram and though it worth covering here as the reply is too long for a comment. Unfortunately it seems the author has a few wires crossed and may be inadvertently causing more confusion than clarity.

Friendly FYI here... you've got a few wires crossed with this post (long comment ahead);

Quote
Hey guys,

I wanted to share a little bit with you today on what a DMCA is versus a trademark violation.

Everyone should know their rights on both sides.

For DMCA, nobody has the authority to act on the owners behalf. If you have got a DMCA complaint you have the right to ask for verification from @imvu that they are allowed to act on the owners behalf. Must include an electronic signature or regular one.

- DMCA can be acted upon by 3rd parties (Designated Agents) so long as they are granted that authority by the rights holder (unlikely for IMVU/SL).

- if you receive a 'take-down' IMVU is obligated to notify you of the Notification ... it's important to note that they are not acting on the 'owners' behalf but fulfilling their obligation to DMCA.

Quote
The DMCA requires service providers to tell you IMMEDIATELY when they remove any of your content due to a takedown notice. Here is the kicker though! Pay attention... You have the right to submit a counter notice demanding the materials be put back up. I suggest you do this through a certified letter so you have proof if litigation is necessary. Also, there is NO TIMELINE ON WHEN YOU CAN SEND A COUNTER NOTICE. If you were disabled 2 years ago, this still applies to you! Also, remember if you fail to respond to a DMCA, even on IMVU, you are subject to a copyright lawsuit in real life only by the owner NOT IMVU.

- the Counter Notice is not a demand to reinstate any removed items, it's a Counter Notice to the initial infringement notice (take down) ... the issuer of that has a limited time to refute your Counter, Claim after which any removed content will be 'lawfully' reinstated.

- depending on where you are (jurisdiction/geo-location), email notification is considered 'proper notice'.

- if you have received a Take-Down, it's prudent to deal with it ASAP to prevent the delay being used as an argument against you.

- similarly if you 'fail' to respond that will be used against you.

Quote
If you have won a DMCA that just means they took down the content. But you as a creator are now entitled to compensation. You can sue that other creator in real life and IMVU because BOTH parties have profited off your work. It caused you a financial loss.

- you don't 'win' a DMCA claim unless that's the outcome of a court case. If a counter claim is not pursued through the courts that isn't a 'win' either, it's the process working as intended to mitigate frivolous suits.

- at no point are you "entitled to compensation" unless that's adjudicated by a Court, having content reinstated is not 'winning' in that sense unless you take someone to court to seek compensation (you are entitled to seek compensation) for losses (which have to be proved).

- in addition, so long as IMVU acts as defined in the legislation they will have a strong defence against being party to a suit, so while it *might* be possible to include them, it'd be difficult and costly to prove fault.

Quote
Now, if you use a texture from a mesh and slightly changed it. This is not copyrighted, it has to be an original work. It doesn't even matter if their name's on it. Names are not copyrighted, they have to be trademarked.

You can use brand names! You just have to do it the RIGHT way. Nike, Addias, anything you want. Just make sure you do it in a way where you can prove it's comparative advertising, news, a parody, and/or critique.

For example don't just use the word Nike. Use Nike with a reverse slogan.
Nike - Don't Do It. The DMCA comes from their imaged LOGO <--- not that name! The swoosh is copyrighted and a DMCA can be filed.

Also remember, ICON's are copyrighted and YOU CAN DMCA for it.

- and finally, and perhaps most importantly, "comparative advertising" etc. are defences not excuses, YOU (the creator), is not the party to determine if something is an infringement or not, the Rights owner is (and Courts).

# # #

We need to be *very careful* how this topic is discussed else it gives people the wrong impression about what they can and cannot do and/or expect from DMCA and IMVU.

Blog / The Death of Feminist Frequency and Toxic Activism (TM)
« Last post by kat on August 02, 2023, 05:58:38 PM »
Feminist Frequency Ends

"At this point, what difference does it make!?"

A lot, ackshoeally, but not for the reasons the protagonist of this story might like to think.

Anita Sarkeesian is calling it quits on Feminist Frequency after some 14 years of 'political activism' [1], most of it notably as a consequence of gamergate flame baiting and cry-bullying [2].

"With my heart stuffed full of a million different emotions, today I share the news with you that Feminist Frequency is closing" [source].

Gamers aren't necessarily rejoicing the fact because they understand the politized toxicity she and her cohorts injected into the games industry has transmogrified into something more serious than the slow acting poison that was their intentionally fractious brand of "diversity and inclusion".

The truth is, Feminist Frequency's demise has been long over-due, the organisation living off the fumes spewed by its most fanatical supporters and political opportunists, and because the brand of activism they championed had outlived its usefulness to the corporations within the gaming industry Anita brags to have "changed".

No doubt these very same entities will agree, perhaps even going so far as dedicating a few column inches to appropriately glowing obituaries of sincere praise; a job well done; change worth changing for, and so on.

Of course, Feminist Frequency didn't 'change' anything. They, like most politically motivated organisations, were just a useful contemporary tool to further the aims of those they claim to be changing.

To that end, and why gamers aren't rejoicing or breathing sighs of relief, the toxic antagonistic politics of Anita Sarkeesian, Feminist Frequency, their viciously vocal cohorts and activist journalist colleagues, has simply been subsumed into ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) and DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) initiatives and policies as though the former never existed, the only traces being individuals similarly absorbed into various hierarchical corporate structures they still think they're culture-jacking, just to be pushed into the background, surplus to requirements but kept around to keep them quiet.

They're no longer useful and have been cast aside despite their egotistical imaginings.

What they thought were corporate allies were just organisations utilising their aggressive activism to throw out the dead wood and bring in systems that afford far greater control over their footprints; the politics of Feminist Frequency were simply a tool corporations used to open the gates to the far more powerful and far reaching underlying politics that govern ESG, DEI and other initiatives; a quasi-technocratic neo-feudalism, a future where everything is controlled by a 'social credit score' and centralised digital currency. As the saying goes, "you will own nothing and be happy".

The hubris and arrogance, the political short-sighted toxic and anachronistic politics of Anita Sarkeesian, Feminist Frequency and her allies and cohorts in the media have condemned everyone, themselves included, to a future they will never control, and neither will their children, if they have any.

And if it weren't for gamers and gamergate just wanting to be left along to play vidya, we wouldn't have had a clue.
