Click here to Download GIMP Normalmap. For installation instructions see the included README file that accompanies the ZIP file.

Once normalmap.exe is copy/pasted into the plug-ins folder the filter will be available from the "Filters" menu next time GIMP is started. To use: with image open (and flattened, if its a working file) click "Filters > Map > Normalmap". For most images only "Scale:" and "Filter:" values will likely need be changed. Then once done simply save or export the image to the desired format.

Notes on Usage

* Filter works best with regular or man-made structures, i.e. straight lines, blocks and shapes.
* 3D Preview options are for visual reference only - diffuse, gloss and other settings are not applied or assigned to the image being normalised.
* Make sure images only contain grey-scale tones and colours or is fully desaturated

Shaderman:
Thanks kat for introducing these normal map tools.

No problem. There's a couple of other topics to cover, not sure when they'll be up though.
