Title: Torque closes. Alternative engine tech?
Post by: kat on November 16, 2010, 08:14:56 PM
[UPDATE] Slightly confused about this but it appears, as of Jan of this year (2011), that Garage Games is back in action and appareantly "back to it's roots". Read more here (http://www.garagegames.com/community/blogs/view/20775).

----------------

Instant Action, the current owners of the Torque game engine technology are shutting down the project (http://www.torquepowered.com/community/blogs/view/20495). With this happening what alternative technologies are available for indie game devs? The most common techs are listed below, licensing varies between free for non-commercial use to Epic's UDK being the least 'favourable' to indies (in terms of percentage taken). If you know of any others, add them below.

Commercial middle-ware
Trinigy (http://www.trinigy.net) - Licensing (http://www.trinigy.net/en/licensing).
Shiva3D (http://www.stonetrip.com/) - Licensing (http://www.stonetrip.com/shiva/view-all-products.html).
Unity3D (http://unity3d.com) - Licensing (https://store.unity3d.com/shop/).
UDK (http://udk.com/) - Licensing (http://udk.com/licensing).
3DVia (http://www.3dvia.com/getting-started/game-developer/) - Licensing (https://www.3dvia.com/pricing)

Open Source
OGRE (http://www.ogre3d.org/) - Licensing (http://www.ogre3d.org/licensing/licensing-faq).
XReal (http://xreal-project.net/) - Licensing (http://xreal-project.net/?page_id=10).
idTech3 (http://idsoftware.com/) - Licensing(GPL)
IndieZen (http://www.indiezen.org/) - Licensing (http://www.indiezen.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=45&Itemid=28).

that's a shame about torque but good idea of yours to start listing alternatives.
