News from QuakeCon. id software is releasing Doom 3 source code (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zgYG-_ha28&t=1h23m50s) later this year once Rage is out. Keynote from John Carmack (c.1hr 30mins) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zgYG-_ha28). No details on licensing yet (probably similar to idtech 3) but it should allow indie game devs access to the some powerful real-time tech.

very cool of them to do that. i've been recently thinking of using d3 again in some way for my new ip, which shares some of the assets i was making for my old d3 mod.
i haven't yet watched all of carmack's keynote speech, does anyone know if rage (idtech5) is going to be moddable?
here's the gametrailers videos which i've just started watching:

Technically yes, it's going to be moddable, but Carmack himself said (towards the end of the keynote) that he doubted anyone would really do much with it because it takes a massive amount of effort now, more so than D3, and especially so if you were wanting to make anything with MegaTexture.
-
understood, still at least it sounds like (from what your saying) that they will allow the mod community to try to use their tools? i've still not got to that part of the keynote yet.

I just watched this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUhDQP2dY3c&feature=player_embedded
It shows some id Tech 5 editor using 3D painting for plants @3:30+. The technology Carmack mentioned in his keynote is highly interesting. I bet a lot of people would love to play around with it.

Second half of the keynote: QA (1hrs 30mins) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00Q9-ftiPVQ

Is it only me or is id Software nervous about the launch of Rage?
-
@pazur, blender can also paint 3d objects like that.
@kat, cool, i was wondering when the qa would be shown.

Is it only me or is id Software nervous about the launch of Rage?
Well it has been 7 years their last game (Doom 3 PC release on 4th Aug 2004) so it would be a surprise for them not to be a little on edge. It's a brand new IP, it's taken 8+ years of development (from the group up), they're now with a brand new publisher, it doesn't have 'big' multiplayer capabilities out of the box and so on. So yeah, they've got a lot riding on this one ;D
I won't be buying it myself as it'll not run on the machine I'm using. I won't be buying Skyrim either, so I'm sad :'( I need a serious upgrade (still might buy it just to support them, just won't be able to play any of them.. hmm that reminds me, need to add Brink to that list as well).
-
kat, what's the recommended spec for rage and skyrim?
-
"A new PC" ;D
I've not seen any specs listed anywhere so I'm not sure, I could just about run Quake 4/Quake Wars/Oblivion so can pretty much assume not being be able to run any of the newer games.
-
hehe, understood. and do you think even the most powerful laptops available now will be able to run rage?
since i've been using this low end dell for the last year or so i prefer working on it to a desktop, although i haven't tried playing games, but i was hoping to upgrade to a high end laptop oneday.
-
Kat, I think Rage will run on your box if ETQW ran ... it´s a console game and the PC port wont bring any extras. Before I upgraded my system most console ports worked perfectly on it.
I found some predicted requirements: http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=71&game=Rage

We now have final official requirements for Rage:

-

◦Hard Disk Space: 25GB
◦Video Card: GeForce 8800, Radeon HD 4200
Recommended:
◦OS: Win XP SP3, Vista, Win 7
◦Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad or Equivalent AMD
◦Memory: 4GB
◦Hard Disk Space: 25GB
◦Video Card: GeForce 9800 GTX, ATI Radeon HD 5550

thanks kat and same here with the gfx card/chip in this laptop, otherwise the min spec looks ok. do you think any of todays laptops could run rage smoothly?
-
So long as you're within spec they should (overstating the obvious ;) ). GFX and memory will be the kickers on this one because of megatexture, the more memory you have the better it'll be at streaming the MT in and out.

understood, cool.
