Check with the bug tracker (blender.org) to see if there are any reports on this. If not, submit a report to see what the response is, there may be a legit reason for it which they've just not published.

thanks for the link kat. i'll probably do this tomorrow, along with reporting any other bugs i find, if they haven't already been reported.

i had a look at their bug tracker but didn't really understand it, i feel like such a newb but is there any documentation on using the bug tracker?

When you log in there should be an additional menu item "Submit New". Click that. Lower down the page, select a "Category" from the drop-down list, then add a "Summery", a "Description" (with attachments where necessary) then press "Submit". You don't really need to do anything else (oh make sure you're in the 2.6 tracker and not the 2.5, there are two different sets to track/submit for now).

hehe, thanks a lot kat, i hadn't registered so that's probably why i couldn't see the submit buttons.
