While the feature itself is functionally the same as for previous versions, Blender 4.2 LTS+ introduces a number of options.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"eevee-backface-culling-all-display-modes\"><\/span>EEVEE: Backface Culling | All Display Modes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>For Blende 4.2 LTS and above, Backface Culling is still enabled from within a given materials properties so to active, in <strong>Material Properties<\/strong> select the instance for which backfaces are to be culled and scroll down to <strong>Settings<\/strong>. Here, expand <strong>Surface<\/strong> (click the heading) to find <strong>Backface Culling<\/strong> and the <strong>Camera<\/strong>, <strong>Shadow<\/strong> and <strong>Light Probe Volume<\/strong> options. For box-standard backface culling click the <strong>Camera<\/strong> [1] checkbox. Objects assigned the corresponding material will render single sided in both <strong>Material Preview<\/strong> and <strong>Rendered<\/strong> display modes.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Design note<\/strong>: material based culling is not available for <strong>Solid<\/strong> display mode despite option availability. Image-bottom: back faces culled in <strong>Rendered<\/strong> display mode with same setting, <strong>Camera<\/strong>, enabled.<\/i><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"cycles-backface-culling-material-preview\"><\/span>Cycles: Backface Culling | Material Preview<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>For Blender 4.2 LTS+ and Backface Culling in <strong>Cycles<\/strong> the set-up differs slightly to EEVEE. To enable when using <strong>Material Preview<\/strong> to view the 3D Viewport, in Material Properties select a material instance then in <strong>Viewport Display<\/strong> properties, under <strong>Settings<\/strong>, enable the <strong>Backface Culling<\/strong> checkbox. Meshes will display single-sided.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/culling\/backface-culling-cycles-material-preview.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/culling\/backface-culling-cycles-material-preview.jpg\" alt=\"Cycles Backface Culling Material Preview\" width=\"900px\" height=\"500px\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<i>When Cycles render engine is active and Material Preview display mode is active, <strong>Backface Culling<\/strong> [2] is found in the <strong>Viewport Display<\/strong> options of <strong>Material Properties<\/strong>.<\/i><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"cycles-backface-culling-rendered\"><\/span>Cycles: Backface Culling | Rendered<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>For <strong>Backface Culling<\/strong> in <strong>Rendered<\/strong> mode, while the option is available in Material Properties the effect isn&#8217;t functional. Instead Backface Culling for Cycles has to be enabled via a material or shader set up using a <strong>Geometry<\/strong> node. To do this, in <strong>Shading Workspace<\/strong> add a <strong>Geometry<\/strong> node to a standard node set (Principled BSDF and Material Output) &#8211; <strong><em>Add \u00bb Input \u00bb Geometry<\/em><\/strong>. To this add a <strong>Mix Shader<\/strong> and <strong>Transparent BSDF<\/strong> nodes &#8211; <strong><em>Add \u00bb Shader \u00bb Mix Shader<\/em><\/strong>\/<strong><em>Transparent BSDF<\/em><\/strong> (both found within Shader). Connect the Nodes as follows;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mix Shader<\/strong> to <strong>Material Output<\/strong> &#8211; <em>Shader output<\/em> to <em>Surface input<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Principled BSDF<\/strong> to <strong>Mix Shader<\/strong> &#8211; <em>BDSF output<\/em> to <em>Shader input<\/em> (top)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transparent BSDF<\/strong> to <strong>Mix Shader<\/strong> &#8211; <em>BSDF output<\/em> to <em>Shader input<\/em> (bottom)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Geometry<\/strong> to <strong>Mix Shader<\/strong> &#8211; <em>Backfacing output<\/em> to <em>Fac input<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Once everything is linked up backfaces will be culled, surfaces rendered single-sided.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Design note<\/strong>: for Rendered mode, when setting up backface culling in Cycles, the materials <strong>Blend Mode<\/strong> may be forced-set to <strong>Alpha Hashed<\/strong>; it typically cannot be changed while <strong>Transparent BSDF<\/strong> or other form of transparency is active.
