While there is an informal mechanism to remove this extraneous <b>orphaned data<\/b> (<i>save \u00bb quit \u00bb open \u00bb resave \u00bb quit \u00bb open<\/i>), in some cases it may stubbornly remain in place. To address this the <b>Orphan Data editor<\/b> can be used.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Design note<\/b>: typically orphaned data is accessible at all times like any other type of data but may be distinguished by a &#8220;0&#8221; (zero) [i] prepend to the offending asset. This indicates the item has no (zero) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/codex\/delete-material\/#delete-material\">Users<\/a> &#8211; it is not linked to, or is being referenced by, anything within the project.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/orphan-data\/unused-data.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 98.5%; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/orphan-data\/unused-data.jpg\" alt=\"No User indicator\" width=\"900px\" height=\"500px\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<i>Assets or data not linked or referenced in a project will be prepended a &#8220;0&#8221; (zero) [i] indicating it has no Users.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"orphaned-data-editor\"><\/span>Orphaned Data Editor<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The <b>Orphaned Data editor<\/b> is a sub-editor of the <b>Outliner<\/b> so to access it, in the <b>Outliner<\/b> click the <b>Display Mode<\/b> button [1]. From the list of options shown in the drop-down select <b>Orphan Data<\/b> [2] &#8211; <b><i>Outliner \u00bb Display Mode \u00bb Orphan Data<\/i><\/b>. The Outliner will then display a list of items in the project considered to be orphaned and available for deletion. Simply select [3] and press <span class=\"shortcutkey\">Delete<\/span> or <span class=\"shortcutkey\">X<\/span> to remove the unwanted asset or data.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Design note<\/b>: in instances where <span class=\"shortcutkey\">Delete<\/span>\/<span class=\"shortcutkey\">X<\/span> doesn&#8217;t work, <i>right-click<\/i> the entry corresponding to the assets or data to be removed to access the <b>Outliner ID Data Operation<\/b> context menu. Here, select <b>Delete<\/b> from the available options to force the selected items removal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/orphan-data\/outliner-id-data-operation.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 98.5%; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/orphan-data\/outliner-id-data-operation.jpg\" alt=\"Right-click delete\" width=\"900px\" height=\"500px\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<i>If Delete or X don&#8217;t work, right-click the entry to be removed and select <b>Delete<\/b> [ii] from the content menu.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/orphan-data\/orphan-data-editor.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/orphan-data\/orphan-data-editor.jpg\" alt=\"[descriptive alt image text here]\" width=\"900px\" height=\"500px\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<i>To access the <b>Orphan Data editor<\/b> click the <b>Display Mode<\/b> [1] button in the Outliner and select that option from the menu [2].<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/orphan-data\/orphan-data-list.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/orphan-data\/orphan-data-list.jpg\" alt=\"Deleting Orphan Data\" width=\"900px\" height=\"500px\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<i>In the <b>Orphan Data editor<\/b> select the items [3] to be removed and delete.<\/i><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"append-removal\"><\/span>Append Removal<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As an alternative to the Orphan Data Editor, errant assets can be removed by creating a clean file and using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/codex\/imvu-append\/\">Append<\/a> to selectively import assets, leaving unwanted data behind in the source file. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Design note<\/b>: for Append to work the unwanted data <i>must not be referenced<\/i> by anything being brought in otherwise it will be included. In the source file double-check the item has 0 (zero) Users.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To do this, from the <b>File<\/b> menu create a new project as normal &#8211; <b><i>File \u00bb New \u00bb [project type]<\/i><\/b>. Then from the <b>File<\/b> menu again select <b>Append<\/b> &#8211; <b><i>File \u00bb Append<\/i><\/b>. In the <b>Blender File View<\/b> window select the *.blend file containing the data and double-click to dig down into the package, folders (e.g. Object) [4], then assets. Select the data to import then click the <b>Append<\/b> button [5].
