With that said, aside from the obvious differences in appearance, Blender has been consistent in presenting a familiar and perhaps more refined version of the application with each iteration, suitable for the next generation of content creation and development. Discover the best way to learn Blender with the basics below.<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"background-color: #fc0; color: #333;\"><p><b>Important<\/b>: the following is a BASIC OVERVIEW of Blenders interface geared towards real-time or game content production.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"start-up\"><\/span>Start up<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Comparing newer versions of Blender, 2.8x and above, with it&#8217;s predecessor, 2.79, little has changed when the application is first opened\/started, the <b>Splash Screen<\/b> still appears (with a different design), displaying a number of shortcuts to important resources and the &#8216;last opened&#8217; (<b>Recent Files<\/b>) list.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Design note<\/b>: when starting Blender for the very first time (clean install, no previous versions present) the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/codex\/left-click-select\/\">Splash Screen initially displays options to set the dominant mouse button for selections\/actions<\/a>, left or right, to accommodate traditionalist Blender users (right-click) or those wanting functionality more consistent with other applications (left-click).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/blender-28-basics\/select-with.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 98.5%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/blender-28-basics\/select-with.jpg\" alt=\"Setting left\/right selection on Blenders first use\" width=\"910\" height=\"512\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<i>When Blender 2.8+ opens for the first time it displays a dialogue where the selection default can be set, either left or right click, which is then saved to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/codex\/userpref\/\">userpref.blend<\/a> as the default Start Up File.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/blender-28-basics\/blender-28-start.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/blender-28-basics\/blender-28-start.jpg\" alt=\"Blender 2.8 initial appearance on starting\" width=\"910\" height=\"512\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<i><b>Blender 2.80<\/b> on starting showing the Splash Screen and options.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/blender-28-basics\/blender-279-initial.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/blender-28-basics\/blender-279-initial.jpg\" alt=\"Blender 2.79 initial appearance on starting up\" width=\"910\" height=\"512\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<i><b>Blender 2.79<\/b> on start up showing the Splash Screen and options.<\/i><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"initial-layout\"><\/span>Initial Layout<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The initial <b>Layout<\/b> presented by Blender for 2.8+, or <b>workspaces<\/b> (<b>Workspace<\/b>) as they are now known, is not that dissimilar to previous versions,\u00a0 at face value being generally organised much the same way &#8211; a main 3D area, various properties to the right, tools to the left. What is different is its <i>look<\/i>, the overall <i>theme<\/i> design or appearance; the <i>Tool Shelf<\/i> to the left of the <i>3D View<\/i> [1], now referred to as the <b>Toolbar<\/b> (<span class=\"shortcutkey\">T<\/span>) [2], is still present but functions in a slightly different way &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/codex\/edit-mode-basics\/\">it appears as a series of button\/icons<\/a>. So too is (<i>View<\/i>) <b>Properties<\/b> (not shown by default), itself now called the <b>Sidebar<\/b> (<span class=\"shortcutkey\">N<\/span>) [3] . To the right-side the <b>Outliner Editor<\/b> [5] (upper half) and <b>Properties<\/b> [4] panel (lower half) are still present with their respective buttons, settings and options.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Design note<\/b>: the Properties panel icons are displayed vertically and colour-coded based on their general purpose or function &#8211; broadly speaking, white (light-grey) for Scene, Rendering etc., fuchsia for materials, blue for modifications etc.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/codex\/info\/\">Info Editor<\/a> [6] header still runs along the top of the application but has undergone a facelift; <b>Layout<\/b> (formerly <i>Choose Screen layout<\/i>) options are now fully featured as a series of clickable (customisable) <b>Workspace<\/b> [7] tabs that change the interface to match the task represented, making this under utilised feature more accessible and prominent.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Design note<\/b>: <b>Workspace<\/b> effectively replaces <b>Choose Screen Layout<\/b> for newer versions of Blender.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/blender-28-basics\/default-layout.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/blender-28-basics\/default-layout.jpg\" alt=\"Initial layout presented on Blender first use\" width=\"910\" height=\"512\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<i>The initial layout presented by Blender, many areas and editors are still in the same place but shown as a set of vertical icons instead of a button strip and sidebar.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/blender-28-basics\/blender-279-layout.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/blender-28-basics\/blender-279-layout.jpg\" alt=\"The initial layout presented in Blender 2.79 when ready to be used\" width=\"910\" height=\"512\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<i>The initial layout presented by Blender 2.79.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><video poster=\"\" controls=\"controls\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><source src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/blender-28-basics\/workspaces.mp4\" type=\"video\/mp4\" \/><source src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/blender-28-basics\/workspaces.ogg\" type=\"video\/ogg\" \/><source src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/blender-28-basics\/workspaces.webm\" type=\"video\/webm\" \/><\/video><br \/>\n<i>Layout options are now presented as tabs for more immediate access.<\/i><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3d-viewport-navigation\"><\/span>3D Viewport Navigation<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The main change to Blender is the dominance of the <b>3D Viewport<\/b> (3D View) which now occupies a majority of the interface. Here too, the button strip has been broken up and distributed within the area [1] &#8211; largely along the top. One significant change is the <b>Viewpoint Navigator<\/b> [2] (or view navigator) upper-right, an interactive version of the axis orientation widget that appeared bottom-left corner in Blender 2.79. This is can be clicked to use fixed presets, (left) click-dragged for manual manipulation of the view, and usable generally to rotate around\/re-orientate the scene making it easier to use Blender on touch-screen devices. In addition to the rotation navigator dedicated interactive icons have been included that accommodate <b>Pan<\/b> [3] (hand) and <b>Zoom<\/b> [4] (magnifier).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><b>Design note<\/b>: mouse\/keyboard navigation still works as standard &#8211; middle-mouse, <span class=\"shortcutkey\">Shift<\/span> + or <span class=\"shortcutkey\">Ctrl<\/span> + for <b>Rotate<\/b>, <b>Strafe<\/b> or <b>Zoom<\/b> respectively. No change has been made to the way the 3D View rotates and orientates itself generally.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/blender-28-basics\/3d-navigation.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/blender-28-basics\/3d-navigation.jpg\" alt=\"The initial layout presented in Blender 2.79 when ready to be used\" width=\"910\" height=\"512\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<i>Navigating the scene is now aided by the addition of dedicated tools or widgets to <b>Rotate<\/b> [2], <b>Pan<\/b> [3] and <b>Zoom<\/b> [4], each activated\/used by click-dragging the respective icon (button position may change from version to version but they should generally be located in the same region of the 3D View, upper-right).<\/i><\/p>\n<p><video poster=\"\" controls=\"controls\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><source src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/blender-28-basics\/navigation-widget.mp4\" type=\"video\/mp4\" \/><source src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/blender-28-basics\/navigation-widget.ogg\" type=\"video\/ogg\" \/><source src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/blender-28-basics\/navigation-widget.webm\" type=\"video\/webm\" \/><\/video><br \/>\n<i>Using the new Viewpoint Navigation widget top-right corner of the 3D View.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><video poster=\"\" controls=\"controls\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><source src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/blender-28-basics\/navigation-buttons.mp4\" type=\"video\/mp4\" \/><source src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/blender-28-basics\/navigation-buttons.ogg\" type=\"video\/ogg\" \/><source src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/blender-28-basics\/navigation-buttons.webm\" type=\"video\/webm\" \/><\/video><br \/>\n<i>Using the 3D View navigation icons &#8211; although invisible when used, strafe and zoom do affect the mouse cursors position, which is moving in relation to the 3D View, so may end up on the other side of the screen rather than where an action may have been initialised\/activated (upper-right).<\/i><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"interaction-mode-selection\"><\/span>Interaction Mode selection<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Breaking up and dispersing the 3D Viewport Header buttons and options from Blender 2.79 means a change to the <b>Sets the object interaction mode<\/b> selections, moved to the <i>top-left corner<\/i> of the view, retaining the same options i.e., <b>Object Mode<\/b>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/codex\/edit-mode-basics\/\">Edit Mode<\/a>, <b>Sculpt Mode<\/b>, <b>Vertex Paint<\/b>, <b>Weight Paint<\/b> and <b>Texture Paint<\/b>. As with previous versions of Blender each mode change swaps the array of buttons, settings and options in the <b>Toolbar<\/b> area (the panel formally occupied by the Tool Shelf in Blender 2.79 et al), simply left-click an option from the drop-down menu to switch between modes.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Design note<\/b>: <span class=\"shortcutkey\">Ctrl<\/span> + <span class=\"shortcutkey\">Tab<\/span> displays the <b>Mode<\/b> wheel (pie) menu replacing the selection pop-up.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/blender-28-basics\/interaction-mode-pie.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"width: 98.5%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/blender-28-basics\/interaction-mode-pie.jpg\" alt=\"Interaction mode switches between different editing contexts\" width=\"910\" height=\"512\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<i>Switching between Interaction Mode can also be done using a pie-menu accessible to all contexts using <span class=\"shortcutkey\">Ctrl<\/span> + <span class=\"shortcutkey\">Tab<\/span>. Here four* options are currently shown; <b>Wireframe<\/b>, <b>Solid<\/b> (default as for 2.79), <b>Material Preview<\/b> (<i>environment map\/HDRI<\/i>) (<i>formally <b>Look Dev<\/b><\/i>) and <b>Rendered<\/b> (<i>real-time, full effects<\/i>).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Design note<\/b>: as of Blender 2.81+ <b>LookDev<\/b> is now <b>Material Preview<\/b>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Options previously available in 2.79, <b>Material<\/b> and <b>BoundBox<\/b> in particular have been de-prioritised or combined with the <b>Shading<\/b> and <b>Overlays<\/b> selection options where more variables can be chosen to fit the general rendering overhaul of Blender 2.8+.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Design note<\/b>: aside from the Viewport Shading buttons top-right the options are also available from the <b>Shading<\/b> pie-menu, accessible press the <span class=\"shortcutkey\">Z<\/span> key.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/codex\/snap\/\">Snap<\/a> (<span class=\"shortcutkey\">Shift<\/span> + <span class=\"shortcutkey\">Tab<\/span>) have been moved and are located <i>top-centre<\/i> of
