To use a different engine option, click the <b>Render<\/b> properties button and from the <b>Render Engine<\/b> drop-down menu at the top of the panel select <b>Eevee<\/b>, <b>Workbench<\/b> or <b>Cycles<\/b>. The 3D View will immediately update appropriately. Repeat to set a different engine.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Design note<\/b>: both Eevee and Cycles are equally capable of providing real-time previews, however, Cycles is more resource hungry due its accuracy calculating and rendering object shading, shadows and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/codex\/transparency-cycles\/\">transparency<\/a> &#8211; in switching to Cycles additional options may become available depending on graphic card and\/or system capabilities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/render-engine\/render-engine-eevee.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/render-engine\/render-engine-eevee.jpg\" alt=\"Eevee real-time rendering\" width=\"900px\" height=\"500px\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/render-engine\/render-engine-cycles.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/render-engine\/render-engine-cycles.jpg\" alt=\"Cycles real-time rendering\" width=\"900px\" height=\"500px\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<i>Looking at the same scene rendered live using Eevee (above top) and Cycles (above bottom), shadows, shading and lighting differ significantly, especially where they they might affect or be influenced by, transparent surfaces, layered transparency in particular. This accuracy comes at the much greater expense, Cycles being far more resource hungry.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/render-engine\/render-engine-options.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/render-engine\/render-engine-options.jpg\" alt=\"Changing Render Engine in Blender 2.8\" width=\"900px\" height=\"500px\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<video poster=\"\" controls=\"controls\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><source src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/render-engine\/render-engine.mp4\" type=\"video\/mp4\" \/><source src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/render-engine\/render-engine.ogg\" type=\"video\/ogg\" \/><!--source src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/render-engine\/render-engine.webm\" type=\"video\/webm\" \/--><\/video><br \/>\n<i>Switching between engines used to render the contents of the 3D View and for external output is done in <strong>Render<\/strong> properties using the <strong>Render Engine<\/strong> option, here options to set Eevee (default), Workbench and Cycles are available.<\/i><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"save-engine-default\"><\/span>Save Engine Default<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Although Blender 2.8 uses the Eevee engine by default it is possible to set Workbench and\/or Cycles instead. To do this, start Blender and make sure to be using the &#8216;factory&#8217; *.blend file (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/codex\/userpref\/\">userpref.blend<\/a>), this loads in all the initial presets, settings and options, including a Camera, Cube and Lamp in the 3D View. In <b>Render<\/b> properties set the <b>Render Engine<\/b> as described above, e.g. <i>Cycles<\/i>, and then from the <b>File<\/b> menu click <b>Defaults<\/b> then <b>Save Startup File<\/b> &#8211; <i>File \u00bb Defaults \u00bb Save Startup File<\/i>.
