Although right-click <i>might<\/i> still be set as the default (<a href=\"#left-click-default\">see below<\/a>), being able to swap mouse buttons brings Blender more in-line with practices common with, and more familiar to, other applications without overtly interfering too unduly with Blenders right-click tradition.<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"background-color: #fc0; color: #000;\"><p><b>Important<\/b>: Blender may install with right-click set as the default selection mechanism if a previous version of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/codex\/userpref\/\">userpref.blend<\/a> is found, usually an indication of a previous install. See &#8220;<b>Fresh Install<\/b>&#8221; note below for remedy or follow the remaining instructions to switch selection outlined below.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/left-click-select\/left-click-right-click.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"width: 100%; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/left-click-select\/left-click-right-click.jpg\" alt=\"Right-click is the default selection mechanic for Blender\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<i>Right-click may be set as the default selection operation for Blender but this can now be changed and saved as the default selection mechanism.<\/i><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"fresh-installfirst-rerun\"><\/span>Fresh Install\/First (re)Run<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If Blender is installed fresh, i.e. no prior versions of the application have been installed, are in use, or available, Blender will present a <b>Quick Setup<\/b> splash screen [1] when starting for the first time. Here the <b>Select With<\/b> option can be set depending on personal preference, by clicking the appropriate button, either as <b>Left<\/b> or <b>Right<\/b>. This will then be saved to <b>userpref.blend<\/b> that loads each time Blender starts.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Design note<\/b>: if other versions of Blender have been installed the Quick Setup screen will not appear because selection preference is either using an old default (right-click) or it may have been previously set and saved to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/codex\/userpref\/\">userpref.blend<\/a> found in;<\/p>\n<div style=\"background-color: #E7FAEA; color: #000; font-family:courier\">&nbsp;&bull; C:\\Users\\[user]\\AppData\\Blender Foundation\\Blender\\[#version]\\config\\<\/div>\n<p>If this is the case deleting or renaming the file will force Blender to regenerate the userpref.blend based on the Quick Setup options established during first (re)run.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/left-click-select\/set-selection.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"width: 100%; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/left-click-select\/set-selection.jpg\" alt=\"The Quick Setup splash screen showing Left and Right selection options\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<i>When Blender is run for the first time a <b>Quick Setup<\/b> [1] version of the splash-screen initially appears providing an opportunity to set <b>Left<\/b> or <b>Right<\/b> click as the default selection action, which is then saved and used each time the application is launched.<\/i><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"setting-left-click\"><\/span>Setting Left Click<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If the selection preference has been previously set and\/or a change is needed, to set <b>left-click<\/b> as the selection default, first access <a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/codex\/user-preferences\/\">User Preferences<\/a> (now just referred to as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/codex\/user-preferences\/\">Blender Preferences<\/a>) from the main <b>Edit<\/b> menu [1] in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/codex\/info\/\">Info Editor<\/a> &#8211; <b>Edit \u00bb Preferences<\/b> [2]. This opens the <b>Blender Preferences<\/b> window.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Design note<\/b>: <b>Blender Preferences<\/b> is where most, if not all, the settings and options that determine Blenders general behaviour, how it works, are changed or set, and saved to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/codex\/userpref\/\">userpref.blend<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/left-click-select\/blender-preferences.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"width: 100%; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/left-click-select\/blender-preferences.jpg\" alt=\"Access User Preferences from the main Edit menu\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<i>To swap between left and right click selection first access <b>Blender Preferences<\/b>.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>With <b>Blender Preferences<\/b> open, in the window [1] that appeared, click <b>Keymap<\/b> [2] to access associated options. Here, under <b>Preferences,<\/b> are the <b>Select With<\/b> options; the <b>Left<\/b> and <b>Right<\/b> [3] buttons. Click <b>Left<\/b> [4] to set left-click as the selection default. Close preferences to then be immediately able to select objects using the left-mouse button.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Design note<\/b>: once Left-click is enabled, selecting multiple objects can be done as normal engaging the <span class=\"shortcutkey\">Shift<\/span> key (<span class=\"shortcutkey\">Shift<\/span> + left-click), right-click and all associated functions will be disabled or transferred to left-click.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote style=\"background-color: #fc0; color: #000;\"><p><b>Important<\/b>: if LEFT-click is set as the selection default it may disable or interfere with other operations and function associated with the left-mouse button, <span class=\"shortcutkey\">Ctrl<\/span> + left-click drag may no longer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/codex\/border-select\/\">Lasso Select<\/a> for example.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/left-click-select\/blender-preferences-keymap.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"width: 100%; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/left-click-select\/blender-preferences-keymap.jpg\" alt=\"User Preferences provides two options to set which mouse-button to use for selection\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/left-click-select\/left-click-set.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"width: 100%; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/left-click-select\/left-click-set.jpg\" alt=\"To switch to the left mouse button click Left\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<i>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/codex\/user-preferences\/\">Blender Preferences<\/a> [1] click the <b>Keymap<\/b> (sub)header [2] to the left accessing the <b>Select With<\/b> options [3], then click <b>Left<\/b> [4] to set left-click as the selection option.<\/i><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"left-click-default\"><\/span>Left-click Default<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>To set left-click more permanently as Blenders default selection mechanic, after clicking the <b>Left<\/b> button, click the triple-bar icon bottom-left corner of the preferences window [1], then the <b>Save Preferences<\/b> menu option [2] to store the change in the userpref.blend start-up file, thus ensuring left-click become the default action for new projects.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Design note<\/b>: loading older projects may require left-click to be set per the above because settings may be brought in from the *.blend file originally used to create the project and not the updated start-up file.
