Despite this it is possible to view custom mesh colours by changing a materials <b>Viewport Display<\/b> settings.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Design note<\/b>: for more on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/codex\/material-basics\/\">basics of node-based materials see here<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/viewport\/solid-mode-colour.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/viewport\/solid-mode-colour.jpg\" alt=\"Material 'diffuse' color settings are not displayed in Solid mode\" width=\"900px\" height=\"500px\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<i>In Solid mode [1] meshes appear in the 3D View white as the <b>Base Color<\/b> [3] of an assigned <b>Material<\/b> [2] is not shown unless in <b>Material Preview<\/b> or <b>Rendered<\/b> modes.<\/i><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"viewport-display\"><\/span>Viewport Display<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>To change the colour of a mesh without affecting a materials primary properties, select a mesh to highlight assigned materials then in <b>Material Properties<\/b> [4] scroll down the panel to <b>Viewport Display<\/b>. Click to expand\/access the options (collapsed by default) and then click the <b>Color<\/b> sample field [5], white by default to select\/set a colour from the colour-wheel that appears [6] &#8211; as the colour is changed the mesh will update in the scene.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Design note<\/b>: using standard materials, i.e. <b>Use Nodes<\/b> is disabled, the materials <b>Base Color<\/b> will override (duplicates to) the colour set in <b>Viewport Display<\/b> emulating Blenders legacy material system (only in this respect).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/viewport\/use-nodes-colour.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 98.5%; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/viewport\/use-nodes-colour.jpg\" alt=\"Use Nodes disabled\" width=\"900px\" height=\"500px\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<i>With <b>Use Nodes<\/b> disabled a materials <b>Base Color<\/b> [a] overrides the <b>Color<\/b> assigned in Viewport Display [b].<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/viewport\/set-mesh-colour.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/viewport\/set-mesh-colour.jpg\" alt=\"Changing the colour of a mesh in Viewport Display settings\" width=\"900px\" height=\"500px\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<video poster=\"\" controls=\"controls\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><!--<source src=\"\/images\/tutorials\/viewpoint-navigation.mp4\" type=\"video\/mp4\" \/>--><source src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/viewport\/mesh-colour.ogg\" type=\"video\/ogg\" \/><source src=\"https:\/\/www.katsbits.com\/images\/tutorials\/viewport\/mesh-colour.webm\" type=\"video\/webm\" \/><\/video><br \/>\n<i>In Material Properties [4] change the colour of a mesh by setting a Color [5 &#038; 6] in <b>Viewport Display<\/b> &#8211; if a node-based material is assigned this functions independently of the <b>Base Color<\/b> setting [6].<\/i><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"colour-matching\"><\/span>Colour Matching<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When using node-based materials if the mesh colour and material colour need to match, click the <b>Base Color<\/b> sample and note the <b>R<\/b>, <b>G<\/b>, <b>B<\/b> (or HST etc.) values associated with the property.
