guys, last night I posted this normal/spec/diffuse/ao test I did in cb over at ryan's forum and I thought you might like to see it.
I started using a photo source from freefoto.com
link

apps used: psp7, cb
pretty nice metallic effect imo, and wouldn't take long to make similar ones now I am getting used to cb

Oh lol... I was expecting the source to actually be a bit of metal jewelry. That's one of the more interesting things I've seen done with CB, it actually looks like those pewter trinkets you see Goths wear (*cough* @ Ratty). Nicely done (make sure you save the settings).
[edited the photo site link, if you add a www to link text it tends to mess it up so keep and eye out for that]

hehe, thanks kat and yes my gf has some pewter jewelry which inspired me when creating those textures
also the d3 phobos mod guys have been asking me to make some textures for them and I needed to experiment with various types of metal in cb. I think I'm finally ready to make the move to gimp though, as psp7 is just too old, and I can't afford ps yet.
also noted about the www, will try to remember that.
edit: oh and cb is getting better at saving its presets. I've been beta testing it for a while now on ryan's forum. so yes reproducing similar looking results should be relatively quick if the source images have been tweaked enough in a photo editing app.

Yes, that's the one thing people are not doing, you really have to prep the photo before you use it otherwise you just end up with a bumped 'photo' and not a bumped 'object', there's a difference; CB does allow for quick results (as you know) but you still have to do some work to get the best out of it.

that certainly seems to be the case, and would you say despite cb's obvious power, the prepping of source images is as much an art as a science? I like that cb seems consistent (when its not buggy) but I'm still learning what make a good source image.
