Doom 'the movie' new trailer [26th Aug 05] ^

Yahoo Movies has a 'new' trailer up on their site for the upcoming Doom movie. It's essentially the same trailer that has been floating around the net that was recorded on shakycam from this years QuakeCon. So if you were disappointed with that, watch this trailer for the full (no sound dropouts) version.

Quake 3 source code released [20th Aug 05] ^

It's been a long time since news of the Quake 3 variety has been posted (apart from the 'semi' news below to do with Quake 4..) but idsoftware have finally released the 'source' code to the Quake 3 engine itself (contains the engine and BSPC bot code). As noted below the file also includes a copy of Radiant the level design tool for Quake 3.

Quake 3 is oft' cited as 'the' definitive online multiplayer shooter and the bots/AI have yet to be better in the opinions of many. So now that this is released under GPL keep an eye out for big improvements to the various modifications currently requiring Quake 3 to run... how knows, maybe even stand-alone versions of the more popular mods (CPMA, ThreeWave, etc..).

Quake III Arena source code released under GPL
----------------------------------------------
We're done packaging up the Quake III Arena source code for a GPL release:

ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/source/quake3-1.32b-source.zip

note that a build of Q3Radiant 200f is included under GPL as well

Quake 4 leaked ?? [20th Aug 05] ^

[update] It's a fake. There were some initial comments of it possibly being the Multi Player test shown at QuakeCon. Various sources have since confirmed that someone has in fact simply zipped up Quake 3 and padding it out to 2+ GB with gameplay movies of dubious quality (appears to be the Quake 3 mod CPMA plus movies of 'leet' game play). It will certainly have got the author a few thousand hits to their web site/download link, nice way to spread crap.

Internet and various gaming sites & forums that Quake 4 has been leaked to the 'net and is available, 'somewhere'. It seems that just about every AAA title has a leak of some description at some point so was this to be expected? If it turns out to be true it will hit Ravens sales figure hard when the game is officially released.

News on this will follow (and now that won't include a download link..!).

The continuing adventures of 'Bob' [14th Aug 05] ^

[UPDATE 21st Aug05] Added a couple of new screenshots and movies to the ongoing forum topic coving the development of the test level mentioned below.

[UPDATE] Added a couple more shots showing some rock formation test objects in the map. See forum link below again.

For those of you that have been interested and/or following the Doom 3 project progress of the 'Bob' (Blender Bob) - who was first introduced in the cubemap demo mentioned some time ago - I've just posted an update to the Quake3Bits forums and a little movie showing a testmap that's being worked on. It's 56k friendly @ 1.5MB so pop over for a look-see.

Quake 4 multiplayer [11th Aug 05] ^

[addendum] The video is from Quake 4 SINGLE PLAYER and not Multi Player as 1st thought, damn marketing dept ;o) Still looks damn nice all the same.

You have got to watch this (sorry no smaller 56k friendly versions at the mo)..!! Brand spanking new in game footage of Quake 4 multi player in action and.... multi player looks like it's gonna rock (literally), even based on this small snippet of ground rumbling goodness (watch the vid and you'll know what we mean by that). Check the links below for download provided by PCGameMods.

misc. rock models [10th Aug 05] ^

This is a separate zip file containing the small 'misc.' rocks that are used in kat1024. They're low polycount so they can be used pretty much with gay abandon if need be. If you're looking for something like this but don't want to download the map to get the models then this pack is for yoooou.

Quake 2 lost marine [10th Aug 05] ^

[correction] The installer for Quake 2 Lost Marine does in fact install to the correct directory when manually set, it's just that the installer itself doesn't update the display to show that file path, it still shows the default even though it then goes on to install the mod files correctly.

[update] There appears to be a problem with the Windows Installer that defaults to C:/Program Files/Doom3 even though you may have chosen a different installation directory. This is currently being fixed, but in the meantime simply moving the files to your Doom 3 directory and editing the short cut should allow the mod to run.

If you've not heard of this project then a little background is in order. Quake 2 Lost Marine is basically a 'recreation' of the Quake 2 game universe on the Doom 3 engine, very appropriate considering that Quake 4 basically carries on from where Quake 2 left off. The project lead, Kiltron, has just released info on there being a 'QuakeCon Demo' being available (currently only through fileplanet) @ c.290MB. For more details about the project and the download link visit the mods official homepage.

please note
The demo is a working 'test build' of the projects being used to unveil the mod to the public and get some initial bug reporting/feedback. You will need Doom 3 to be patched up to 1.3 to play this mod. You'll also need a pretty beefy rig to run Quake 2 Lost Marine as the developer has targeted it (this release at least) at systems using GF 6800-7800 or ATI equivalent graphics card with 1-2 GB main system ram...! Basically, if you have trouble running vanilla Doom 3 then you're gonna have problems with this mod, unfortunately.

TUTORIAL : creating bumps pt2 [10th Aug 05] ^

Part two of 'creating a bumpmap from images' is up. This time covering the creation of a heightTemplate for passing though a bumpmap tool/plugin. The tutorial walks you through the process of creating a 'girder' template that will eventually produce a workable normalmap from an image for use in Doom 3 (or other nextGen title).

Quake 4 @ QuakeCon [9th Aug 05] ^

Like the heading says.... Quake 4, at the least the Multi-Player aspect of the game, is going to be unveiled at this years QuakeCon, the 10th in fact, so keep the eyes peeled for further info on that.

Speaking of QuakeCon, obviously not everyone is going so this year they've seen fit to set up a live webcam service to watch the proceedings from various places. For more info on this visit the QuakeCon web site.
